Herbert Seifter


Herbert A. Seifter, 89, peacefully passed away at Francis House on Sunday July 8th where he was treated with loving care.
He was born and raised in New York City and graduated from Stuyvesant High School and Columbia University, both in New York City. Following graduation from college and service in the Army as a medic, he began a career in business. He took over his wife's father's leather business, based in New York City and known as Goliger Leather Co., Inc.,in his late 20s, after his father in law had a stroke. In 1964 he moved the family from Long Island to Gloversville, New York, where the leather tannery was located, and maintained the New York location as a sales office. He successfully grew the business until 1977, when he sold the business and began his retirement at age 54.
He lived with his wife, Elaine, first in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and then in Brevard, North Carolina from 1977 until 2012. During his retirement years he actively pursued his many interests. He played the clarinet in a band, sang in a choir, acted in plays and musicals, played tennis, and volunteered at a senior center to lead discussions on political events. He also was a regular columnist for the local paper in Brevard writing on topics such as social security, health care reform, and presidential politics.
In 2012 he moved to the Nottingham Retirement Community to be closer to his son Lowell, daughter in law, Sharon McAuliffe and grandson Gabe.
His wife, Elaine and daughter Sandra both predeceased him.
He is survived by his sons Lowell Seifter and daughter in law Sharon McAuliffe of Jamesville, and Russell Seifter and daughter in law Amanda of North Miami; his sisters Harriet Bittens and Joan Greenberg, both of Tuscon; and his 3 loving grandchildren, Gabe Seifter of Syracuse, Catherine Jane Wise of Brooklyn, and Miriam Seifter of San Francisco.
A Memorial Service celebrating his life will be at 7pm this evening at Sisskind Funeral Chapel. Calling hours will be this afternoon immediately prior to the service from 5:30 to 7:00 at the funeral chapel,
