Robert S. Brodstein, M.D. died Monday, June 10, 2019 from complications of age.
Bob was born April 9, 1931 in Reading, PA, the son of David Bernard Brodstein and Ruth Einhorn Brodstein. . He graduated from Bucknell University and Jefferson Medical College. After internship at Denver General Hospital Bob entered the army. While stationed in Korea as an army flight surgeon Bob met and married the former Geri Kennard of Seattle. After completing an ophthalmology residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Bob, Geri and their two children moved to Ogden, Utah to enjoy the dry climate, hunting, fishing, and skiing.
After Geri’s death, he was blessed by finding his second love, Janet Hain Kilhefner, whom he re-met at their 50th high school reunion in Reading, PA. Janet put the gold in his golden years. They enjoyed traveling, cruising, playing duplicate bridge and both became Life Masters.
He served on the boards of Planned Parenthood, Congregation Brith Sholem, Family Counseling Service, the Ogden Nature Center, the local unit of the American Contract Bridge League, the Utah Physician’s Licensing Board, and the Utah Physician’s Assistant’s Licensing Board. Bob was privileged to hold several leadership positions at McKay-Dee Hospital including Chief of Surgery and President of the Medical Staff. He was especially proud of being the first in the nation to identify and describe a syndrome depicting complications from poorly finished intraocular lenses.
He was a news and political junkie and was angered and frustrated by politicians who put party and the special interests that owned them ahead of the interests of our country. Bob devised a strategy for mutual fund investing and would talk about it for hours if he could find anyone to listen. He joined the Wasatch Audubon Society and enjoyed the people, the meetings and the field trips. In recent years Bob’s birding consisted of “back yard birding” out of the front window where he maintained 6 feeders. He was an avid fisherman and spent as much time as possible fishing from his kick boat at Daniel’s reservoir.
Bob is survived by Janet, David (Bridget) Brodstein, M.D. of Ogden, Diane (Brett) Kuppermann of Fayetteville, N.Y., and four fantastic grandchildren: Zachary and Adam Brodstein, Elana and Leah Kuppermann.
When he wasn’t telling jokes or writing letters to the editor and legislators, he was telling it as it is.
