Shirley Herman, 107 of Tamarac, FL passed away on May 3. She was born on October 25th 1909 in New York City to Jacob and Bessie Weller. She married Louis Herman on November 25, 1933. After Louis died she met Sol Strassler who she married in 1983. Sol passed away in 1986. She met Jessie Berk a few years later. They were together for several years in which time they travelled and enjoyed life together. After he died she said she was giving up men. Mom was predeceased by her loving sisters Frances and Lillian and her brother Sam.

Shirley is survived by her children Miriam (Armin) Brown and Robert (Linda) Herman; her grandchildren: Amy Zwerin and Michael Brown (Marji), Michelle Herman, and Brian (Michal) Herman; and her 6 great grandchildren Jessica, Danielle, Joshua, Rachael, Liyam and Eilat.

Family, their relationships, and their well being were paramount to her. She alway made sure that her children attended concerts, went to camp, saw plays, had music lessons, and went to school. She encouraged us to know and to be close to all of our relatives. Whenever anyone in the family was in need mom was there with an outstretched hand. Mom’s personality was exceptional and not limited to her family. She always saw good in people and in her eyes the glass, even if it only had a drop in it, was at least 1/2 full.

Her good intentions were not limited to family. After moving to Florida she organized a group to provide transportation for people without cars so that they could get to doctors and go shopping. Another group was established to provide food for those in need. For her efforts she was honored by the City of Tamarac at a luncheon for community volunteers. Her efforts to help the “old people” continued well past her 100th birthday.

There is almost no way that the family can thank Moya Prawl, her companion, friend, and aide, for the wonderful care and love she gave mom for the past 10 years.

We in her family have been fortunate to love her and have her as a role model to follow.

A minyon will be held at the home of Linda and Bob Herman Tuesday through Thursday at 7-9pm. Donations in her name may be sent to Congregation Beth Sholom - Chevra Shas or to Menorah Park.
